An herbal extract is a concentrated liquid preparation made by steeping herbs in a liquid that draws out what the herb naturally contains. Different liquids and combinations create different styles of extracts, each with its own character, flavor, and advantages.

Tinctures use alcohol, sometimes along with water, as the primary extraction liquid. Alcohol is especially useful for drawing out a wide range of plant compounds and provides excellent shelf stability.

Glycerites use vegetable glycerin and water instead of alcohol. They are alcohol-free and naturally sweeter tasting. I make mine with certified organic, USP food-grade, non-palm vegetable glycerin that is gluten-free, kosher, and vegan/vegetarian. Because alcohol and glycerin extract herbs differently, a glycerite is not simply an alcohol-free copy of a tincture.

My Elixirs begin with an herbal tincture and are blended with honey. The honey softens the sharper character of the tincture, adds natural sweetness, and brings the qualities of honey into the finished preparation.

My Cordials combine tinctures and glycerites in one formula, bringing together two different extraction methods. I created them this way to capture the unique character of both preparations while producing a smooth, approachable herbal extract.

No one style is automatically better. Each preparation offers something a little different. The method I choose depends on the herbs, the formula I’m creating, and how I want the finished extract to be used and enjoyed.
